Questions

Motorized shades and drapery, answered

What we hear most from Utah homeowners and interior designers about motorized shades and drapery. Short, straight answers.

Shades and drapery

What are automated window treatments?

Automated window treatments are shades and drapery that open and close with a motor. You run them from a keypad, a phone app or a schedule, so a whole room or the whole house moves at once. AudioWorks designs and installs them for Utah homes.

What is the difference between pocketed, fascia and open roll shades?

A pocketed shade hides its roller in a pocket in the ceiling, so you see only the window when it is up. A fascia shade covers the roller with a slim cover on the wall or in the window opening. An open roll shade leaves the fabric roll and brackets in view as part of the design.

Should I choose shades or drapery?

Choose shades for a clean, tailored look and for glass that runs to the ceiling. Choose drapery for softness, and for tall glass or sliding doors that should open all the way, because drapery stacks to the side. Many rooms use both, with a screen shade for daytime glare and drapery for the evening.

Which brands do you install?

Our preferred manufacturers are Lutron, GE Proseo by Savant and Silent Gliss. We match the shades to the home's lighting and control system and keep one shade system per home, so every shade works the same way. Silent Gliss and Lutron make our drapery track.

Planning and install

When should motorized shades be planned in a new home?

Plan them before framing. We size the ceiling pockets with the architect, the builder frames them, and every window gets a shade wire before drywall. We measure and install the shades after drywall.

Can you add motorized shades to a home that is already finished?

Yes. Fascia and open roll shades mount on the wall or inside the window opening, so they need no pocket. Battery shades need no wire, so the walls stay closed. Depending on the motor, the batteries last 1 to 5 years between charges or changes.

How do I control motorized shades?

From a keypad on the wall, the app on your phone or your voice. Shades can also run on a schedule, so they open in the morning and close at sunset on their own. They tie into the home's lighting and control system, so one button can set the lights and the shades together.

Are motorized shades loud?

No. Our makers rate their shades between 35 and 50 dBA, measured 3 feet away, which is quieter than normal conversation. Shades in a group start and stop together, so a wall of them moves as one.

Will the shades line up?

Yes. We measure every opening after drywall and order each shade to that size. On the same wall, the bottom edges line up within 1/8 inch.

Do you install in Southern Utah?

Yes. We install across the Wasatch Front, in Park City and Heber, and in Southern Utah, including St. George, Santa Clara and Ivins. Tell us the address on the form and we plan the visit.

Cost

How much do motorized shades cost?

Every shade and drapery track is made to measure, so we quote after we see the windows. The size of each opening, the fabric, the style and the power drive the price. Our quote lists each shade on its own line by room, so you see exactly what goes where.

For interior designers

How does AudioWorks work with interior designers?

You set the look: the style for each room and how it reads in the space. We handle the technical side, from pocket sizes and shade wire with the builder to the field measure, install and programming. You get one contact from design to move-in.

When should a designer bring AudioWorks into a project?

Before framing. Pockets and shade wire are the two things that cannot be added later without opening walls. We can still help after drywall with fascia, open roll and battery shades.

How is the quote laid out?

Each shade is its own line in the quote, grouped by room. You and your client see which rooms get shades and what each one costs. Selections can change before the field measure without starting over.
